I propose to write and produce the opening scenes of a radio play about a young graduate of computer science who has in interest in microchip technology. His interest leads him to invent a microchip which can communicate its location to a central server, which is subsequently deployed as a mandatory implant by the government: it is said that this will improve public safety by reducing crime - potential crime scenes can be detected and police sent to attend to the situation, and the locations of people can be used as evidence in court. It will be the first of three episodes of a serial which will be aired on a Wednesday evening on a new commercial radio station, The Voice, which aspires to attract audiences who usually listen to BBC Radio 4. The entire episode will last approximately 53 minutes; I will only write and produce the first 5 at this stage, however. The writing, producing and broadcasting of radio plays by the station is still in its experimental stages at present - this will be the first radio play to be aired since its launch in the summer of 2008. In order to promote the play I will produce an advert, with a duration of no more than a minute, which will be broadcast at various times throughout the day. It will emphasise the expansion of programming into radio drama and summarise, using suspense and possibly humour, the primary elements of the plot. Excerpts from the play itself will be used to add texture and maintain interest, and information about the play's website (proposed below) will be given. I will also create a page of the station's website about the play which will promote the same aspects as the advert, but in text form. It will be viewable by a public audience before the first episode of the play is first broadcast and will mention how the section of the website will expand and develop over time, for example, by adding the ability to listen to an archive of the latest episode. It is hoped that the play will be broadcast during the first week of May 2010. The accompanying advert and web page should be released at least a week prior to this in order to gain a significant audience.

You have created a credible institutional context for the play and a promising plot idea, supported by a credible promotional campaign. You now need to develop a draft script, using a range of techniques and narrative devices to hook the listener. Do think about the potential conflicts - internal and external - that can drive the story and the audio signposts for location and atmos. Don't get hung up on doing all the exposition in the first five minutes. Check out BBC Writers Room for format and our radio drama website at:

Above all - do listen to some more plays esp Radio 4 2.15 slot
